Act IV - It was fun watching Marius cower before the Prime Evils, but story-wise this act is the most devoid of content. There's only 3 waypoints and 3 quests, the last of which you already know to be "Kill Diablo". It's really a shame as the Pandemonium Fortress is one of the more enigmatic settings that could have used some backstory to flesh it out; how was it established, who are these "champion" shopkeepers?
Diablo was a enemy truly befitting of an end game final boss battle. Until now, I'd never actually fought him directly, and got past Act IV by letting teammates and minions handle him. It was every bit the grueling, nightmarish experience I'd anticipated.
His fire stomp and cone flare moves weren't too threatening as I had a lot of fire resist and lifesteal in my build by then, but the "red lightning hose"...THAT'S A LOTTA DAMAGE! This move took me from my full 550 hp to 0 in about 1.5 seconds. You can avoid getting hit by it with practice, but sadly the mercenary AI just sits there and takes it all. Diablo also has this bitch ass ability where if you create a town portal too close, he can trap it in a bone prison so when you come back you're basically stuck in place until you make another portal or get killed again. If you get stuck by that or his freeze blast you're a sitting duck for the instakill Lightning hose, he would be literally impossible to beat for a melee character if the AI knew how to combo those abilities properly.
I died at least 3 times and had to make many, many trips back to town and stock up on a full belt's worth of potions. But in the end, I did it, I won.
But at what cost? This single extended fight alone cost me about 200k gold in potions, equipment repair, mercenary revival fees, and death tax.
