Never played Honkai before but I heard there's a new 3D mode or something that's really well-made.

Yeah, the same thing happens in Genshin. If you're on a different character when talking to an NPC during a story quest, it'll literally switch you to the MC just for that dialogue, and then switch you back afterwards.
