I believe it uses it's publisher ,paradox, for servers and you can get a copy from gog if you don't like steam drm.
There is also Mechwarrior online if you want a casual version of the old mechwarrior games, as well as Mechwarrior 4 mercs that was released for free some time ago if you want the full simulator experience (you can change the controls to somewhat match a fps though)
