Regarding the bad experience, that's what I meant by the game not being enjoyable if there's a large enough of a skill difference combined with the other point of the game being difficult to actually learn to play.
Your F2P assumptions are also entirely incorrect as there are literally no micro-transactions. They've even taken out the cosmetics shop that was in the base game.
The reason the game is dead is because they were afraid to put in micro-transactions to keep their game afloat after that launch situation where gamers were pissed that they implemented cosmetic micro-transactions in a paid game (even though that happens everywhere nowadays).
Regarding Sea of Thieves or Pirates Online,
I'd like to steer away from anything in which the core gameplay revolves around grinding.
