Interovegas2. Skyway Robbery - Faces In The Dark
#1

[15.1.343]

Captain Finchroscuma Kokadamurinsapantuheno, the ladykiller Orkan Ornvinge and aspiring Andrear Halsey are gathered at the helm of the Espiegel docked in the eternally shrouded city of Nrovthbar in the realm of Broadland. The ship docked just that day, or early night as it were, and the crew free from guard duty have sprinted off to the nearest tavern. The crew are in high spirits thanks to their shares of treasure from the recent haul. Even Aredfln and Edmond have gone to ground to enjoy time away from their responsibilties.
#2
Orkan would like to take his share of the treasure and try to buy the finest prosthetic on Heluso. Something glittering and golden, strong enough to survive the harshest storm, yet elegant enough for the finest ball. He tires of the sharp hook, the disgusted looks of women, and the tears he continually leaves in his fine clothes.
#3
[Imperial]-“And that is your and your servants share.”

Finch places a stack of coin on his desk in front of Andrea and slides it over to her. He leans back and in the momentary silence Barkovs violent chewing of a bone can be heard. The grating of tooth on bone unnerves many but undoubtedly the knight across from his cares little.

[Imperial]-“Keep any troubles while spending it on shore.”
#4
[Imperial] "Of course, cap'n." Andrea takes the shares. "Oh, I do adore thy little dog! He complements thy fierce visage quite well."

She goes to rally Vala and Matyas to disembark. [Uldish] "Before zat, lady, your appearance," Matyas sweeps his hand over her lower body.
[Imperial] "Hark! On the point as always Matyas. What would I do without thee?"
Vala assists Andrea in changing into her peacetime clothing, after which she uses Walk on Two Legs to assume humanoid form.

The three proceed into Nrovthbar to peruse the sights and sounds.
#5
Finch watches through his cabin window as the Espiegel empties. With two wizards on his ship a vessel like the one docked right next to the Espiegel may be under his command one day. Eventually, he snaps out of his daydreaming and pens a letter to Risros inquiring if there is any need of the Espiegel while in the area. If no individual comes to the Espiegel looking for him he whistles for Barkov to follow as he looks for a courier.
#6
The others take their leave while Finch remains on deck. After a while a man yells out from off the side of the Espiegel:

Unknown man-[Imperial]: "Thy Captain reside? I be'est Solor Lonfrodder, captain of the Untamed Red that sleepeth beside thee."

-----

The skydock stands outside the city walls. Orkan flies ahead with simple ease while the rest navigate the patches of dust and pale grasses in the dark. The two women posted at the gate are armed with glaives and clad in chain coats, composite breastplates and composite greaves. Their armor has the polish of steel but the faux golden coloring of bronze. They only give each of the crew a cursory look and do bar their entry.

The gate opens up to a main street about fifteen feet wide. The street snakes its way between the buildings and up along the tamest slopes of the hill. From a glance there between forty and fifty buildings each one and half to three floors high (a half floor consists of an attic or cieling space). The structures are mostly made of plastered walls and topped with pale white fibers reminescent of thatch.

Small pyres light the main street every hundred feet or so all the way to the castle. The alleyways and side streets are steeped in the shadow of late evening, despite it being midday. The only building of note before the castle is a two floor building in the square ahead. It stands apart with exposed black curtains and a tower rising another twelve feet out the back. For those who have spent more than a day in Broadland they know the building to be a temple of the secret gods. Only the priests of the faith are allowed to enter such temples.

The majority of the crew do not care to pause and study the city. They crack jokes and skip to the square where they turn right and find the local tavern.

-----

Andrea and her entourage continue up the path. As they observe their new environment they see sprigs of herbs spread at the base of most doors and catch the soft hints of a thick musky incense being emanating from many of the homes they pass. The commonfolk on the street give hearty greetings to the trio but not much more. From halfway up the ascent they look back down at the town square and everything around. It is a beautiful sight; It is as a sea of candles in the encroaching shadows. The dim orange reflected of the sun contrasts against the black landscape. Above, the empire.

-----

Orkan inquires about acquiring a prosthetic from the first peasant he comes across. They inform him if anyone could manage such a task it would be the priest Ghora or forgemaster Enghyn near the castle proper. Figuring the forgemaster more accessible Orkan makes his way to the top on foot (with only fifteen feet of street and peasants all about he cannot make a clean landing from the skies). After bothering a few more streetgoers he finds the forge. The location is squat and partly dug into the ground. As Orkan steps down into the forge the heat of molten metal hits him hard. He powers through and calls for Enghyn. He sits with the forgemaster for several minutes describing his request and showing what he has to offer in return. The forgemaster regretfully informs him he would need at least three wealth to craft a sterling hand that does not weigh heavy like a lead sculpture.
#7
Finch, standing up already from writing his letter, exits from his cabin with Barkov close on his heel. As he exits he looks on at Captain Solor (wherever he is) and with a grin answers his call

[Imperial]-"Aye, Captain Finchroscuma be here aboard the Espiegel. My apologies for not hollerin' your way sooner I thought you would be in town."

Walking in the direction of the man to make it easier to be heard Finch continues

[Imperial]-"My compliments on your fine vessel. What be his calling in tis' world?"
#8
Now that Finch is in a position to see Solor he discovers an umber skinned portly fellow wearing a lavish blue fur robe.

Solor-[Imperial]: "A fine hound keeps thy company ... Mine vessel be'est Red in calling as in look. He is the Untamed Red. I maintain command over this aged trade ship. Oft transporting the ores of Nrovthbar to Temming's Rise. The winds held our boots to the mud till just the day before but I reckon now we art safe in the sky. What be'est thy purpose in Nrovthbar comrade?"
#9
[Imperial]-“Truly, thy words bring me sorrow. Is there no arrangement we may come to which would allow us to part joyfully, O master of molten metal? No payment in parts, no reduction of price, no exchange of services beyond cold coins which thou may accept?”
#10
Enghyn-[Imperial]: "Thou willingly admit thou shall not remain long. I will not risk mine craft on delayed payment from transients. Thy feathered limbs doth make plain thee be'est enchanter. I be certain my lord would part with mine labors and a parcel o' sterlin ores for an artifact enchanted. Else, mayhaps thy captain couldst offer thee an advance in thy wages."
#11
“Send me to thy lord then, that I may charm his heart and provide the artefact he so desires. I would have this hand, by hook or by crook. Mayhaps I shall return to thy humble forge with the ore and coin thou requires.”
#12
The trio continues to stroll through town at a nonchalant pace.
Andrea:[Privilege? Checked. English? Olde. Oppression? Omnipresent. Yep, it’s Imperial language conversation time.] “Hm, I should like to get some sort of pet like our captain does, or perhaps a horse to continue Vala’s training… but such a commitment would surely detract from our goal.”

Matyas nods. “Indeed, ‘twould be difficult keeping an animal cooped up on board. Thou should witness the conditions belowdecks.”

“I shall when we return. In the meantime, perhaps we’ll get thee a dress instead Vala.”

Vala pouts. “Thou knowest I mislike such fashion. Thou only wears them to suit thy attunement.”

“Hmph, it hath grown on me after a time. But didst thou not wish to follow in my footsteps one day? Or steps, in any case.”

Vala looks down. “I… have not decided. True unity ’tis a double edged sword.”

Andrea smiles at that, resting a hand on her squire’s shoulder. “Don’t I know it. Well, there be’est time aplenty to make up thy mind. For now, perhaps we ought to put our coin to improving ourselves rather than  material goods.”

“Art we resuming the regimen of Power Most Extreme?”

“No. Rather than our arms or legs, what we most need now is to exercise our tongues.” Andrea opens her mouth to indicate said organ.

“I… see, milady…” Vala raises an eyebrow at this questionable phrasing.

Andrea will look into procuring a tutor in learning the Ob-lob language.
#13
Finch takes the time as he speaks to examine the array of weaponry and condition of the sky vessel and he speaks.

[Imperial]-"Barkov be more loyal than any man or woman I've ever known and has saved my neck several times beside. Fortune favored our arrival here in Nrothvbar so Red should have no troubles ascending fat with money and goods. For the Espiegel, however, there be a more troubled future as we plunge into Imperial territories to pillage and plunder. Privateering be a tough life but it's thoroughly rewarding."
#14
Orkan goes to the court of King Khdyrn Kolosg and gains an audience on the merit of his enchanting skills. He negotiates with the court steward for an exchange of services and pay. Orkan promises to make the first month of spring an easy one for the farmers in return for 11 confederate pounds. They agree to his terms, 30 days of good weather on the King's pastures for treasure.

During the month Orkan toils every night to keep the frosts away and the rains light. Nearly half the days of the month are already of acceptable condition. However, Orkan is not able to bend the weather to his will enough to meet the agreed upon conditions. The court still acknowledged his efforts and provided 7 pounds as compensation.

Andrea finds two capable of teaching her Ob-Lob. Cap-tane Fanch and Edmond. The first mate is willing to impart his knowledge free of charge. However Andrea suspects his blessed speech patterns will be passed onto her should she learn from him.

Solor-[Imperial]: "I make for the coast without concern then! I give thee thanks for such tidings. Should ye need a message taken along mine path it would be of no matter to relay it."

Solor steps up onto the Espiegel. From here you can see he holds a bottle of liquor in his right hand.

Solor-[Imperial]: "An' mayhaps thou favor a sip of spirits?"
#15
Finch gives a hearty laugh and a big grin at the fine fellow

[Imperial]-"Then it seems two problems of mine have been solved in one foul swoop, delivery of a letter and my sobriety!"

Finch will eagerly go and drink with the man and provide the details for delivery of the letter
#16
Andrea spreads her hands in an “Aha!” expression. [Imperial] “Harken, my friends, for that which we sought was before our noses this entire time. Our gracious first mate Edmond can teach us the sea folk’s tongue, and for not ev’n a single pound! Canst thou believe our good fortune, Vala?”

Vala puts a palm to her head with a strained smile. [Imperial] “My goodness, what an idea. Why didn’t I think of that?”

Andrea: [Imperial] “Oh, do not fault thyself, that is why thou art mine squire. Matyas?”

Matyas: [Uldish] “Edmond eez much beluffed by our fellow Sky Sailors. If ve learned to speak as he does ve vould surely vin their favor as vell.”

Andrea: [Imperial] “Another excellent point. Let us commence without further ado!”
#17
Each spends the next thirty days attempting to better themselves.

Ornvinge spends his days enchanting the weather and nights trying to bed the fairest women of Nrovthbar. Andrea is a quick study under Edmond and has learned to speak some degree of Ob-Lob. Captain Finch recruits from the nearby hamlets and farms with authority to accept peasants guaranteed by his writ. Edmond and Aredfln oversee daily drills to get the crew into fighting form.

[15.2.343]

The chill of winter is almost entirely banished from Nrovthbar, in small part thanks to Orkan. A small cargo vessel arrived the day before and brought with it a message written for Finch in poor Imperial. Risros writes:

Risros-[Imperial]: "Honored friend, It pleases me to learn thou art healthy and alive. Rumor here has it you were vanquished in the high skies. Shows what good confederate rumors are."

The letter continues on for some time updating Finch on the happenings along the coast, the condition of Risros and his immediate family and Finch's cousins. Eventually the tone shifts and the matters of business begin.

Risros-[Imperial]: "To matters at hand. Fortune favors your as it so often does. I have a friend that has assembled a great heap of confederate pounds if I can bring to him a rare artifact thought to be a few days from Nrovthbar. At the border where Broadland, the independent city of Helj and the Sunless Plains meet there is a sizeable garrison comitted to defending our Broadland friends from Imperial aggression. The general, Marcutio of Illiam, is a young decorated veteran of the thorn valley battles and keeps at his side an enchanted shield engraved with his family crest. The coin is yours if you can lighten Marcutios burdens without raising any alarm."
#18
The Espiegel finally being back in full fighting order has put Finch in an extraordinarily good mood. When he receives the letter he is walking about the deck watching as the men and women perform their tasks in keeping the vessel ready for launch and admiring the finally clean and slightly less bloodstained decks. He thanks the individual who delivers the message and calls out to first mate Edmond.

[Imperial]-"Edmond! Gather the officers and meet me in me cabin! We have our next venture and blimey will it be a profitable one!"

Finch will return to his cabin and begin looking over his maps as he waits
#19
A lean, sightly dirty looking woman in perhaps her early twenties approaches Finch right outside the Espiegel as he attempts to return to his ship, her braided hair oily from going many days unwashed. She is accompanied by a large canine which looks remarkably like a wolf.

Judy - [Imperial]: "Aye, my good man, I heard from the nearby townsfolk that ye be recruiting for ye crew? I was wondering what ye and yer crew do for a living, and, if at all possible, I could be a part of yer enterprise?"
#20
Finch stops mid walk and turns to look at the individual who is speaking to him. He is taken aback for a moment by the abruptness of the inquiry and, upon noticing the hound, feels like he is looking in a mirror. Shaking his head to come back to his senses he sizes up the woman before him and responds

Imperial-"I be recruitin' sailors for my sky vessel the Espiegel yes. If ye be lookin' to make a fortune and are capable then you can speak to me first mate."

Finch worries at cuffs of his jacket as he speaks. The last time someone approached him so abruptly about joining his crew they were a strange and mouthy horse person
#21
Edmond cocks an eyebrow at this stranger's arrival. He leans over to Captain Finch and whispers in his ear.

Edmond-[Ob-Lob]: "Wicha non-hida inthot on thisaroo raitcha 'ere cap-tane F-a-n-c-h?"
#22
Finch's happy demeanor is immediately broken as Edmond speaks. Finch points up towards the man and says to the woman before him

[Imperial]-"That be him there."
#23
Edmond shrugs at the captain.

Edmond-[Ob-Lob]: "Bin your eon waith'na sprit taa weelin ta vulnehrat thyself."

Edmond turns to Judy.

Edmond-[Imperial]: "Thou den be shrudded ba KNOWING of noth, IaIa~. Thy call, thy call, squawk tha melody!"
#24
Judy, with her limited understanding of Ob-lob, thought she had just heard a sound of demonic origin come from the man named Edmond's mouth, but manages to suppress her twitching facial muscles in time to form a more amicable expression to greet Edmond with.

[Imperial] - "Ah yes, as I was saying, I would like to join the crew, my good man. Perchance ye might have an opening? I've some skills with books, and... negotiation, and my buddy Henry here can fight."
#25
Finch hasn't the slightest idea what Edmond just said to him but will go towards his cabin
#26
Orkan walks up behind the Captain, [Imperial}-"Whatfor, Edmond. Dost another young maiden grace our ranks? My dusky, dark-skinned lady, shall thou join our ship and our endeavors? We seek a full crew, a hardy band of brothers and sisters with whom we may storm the very skies themselves. Mayhaps with thy company, we shall reach even greater heights!"
#27
Edmond relents, he sees the other officers and the captain are unconcerned with Judy's origin despite her excellent manner of speaking and strangely aware companion.

Edmond-[Imperial]: "Fahn ethn'ya desrai tha shade'ohs tune tha she be oparred o we."

Edmond extends his hand to Judy.
#28
Elsewhere, Andrea sneezes. [Imperial] "Blessings upon thee," Vala says automatically.
[???] "Be tha sonicals under panoptikin'!" Andrea chides in response. "Only fullcycle's vigil be bolster'n tha taster manifold!"
Vala tugs on her auburn hair in frustration. [???] "Gah! That be't the full monty o' mine sweat!"
[???] "Pfft, self-same pardonition thou forthput in th'slack of ouar musseling!"

Following along, Matyas silently scribbles notes into his journal.
#29
Aredfln enters the conversation.

Aredfln-[Imperial]: "Give mercy good Edmond. How our ranks swell, among us all a contagious goddess of excitement. Our goddess calls and here this Lady's feet fall."

He turns to Judy.

Aredfln-[Imperial]: "Claim what is given."

Aredfln gestures to the below deck.
#30
This is the first time in her life her mastery of the Imperial language has failed her, only roughly able to understand what Edmond is saying, but in anyhow Judy extends her hand to shake Edmond's.

Judy-[Imperial]: "I'm glad to be part of the crew."

She then turns to the more understandable Aredfin and says.

Judy-[Imperial]: "It's hard to see what is precisely given when ye dost not say, perhaps ye might lead the way and introduce to me what should be mine?"
#31
Finch, basically at his cabins door by this point, yells over at the dilly dallying group

[Imperial]-"Oi! Did I misspeak or did I summon my officers?!"
#32
Edmond joins Orkan in Finch's cabin the look at Finch waiting for his commands.
#33
Finch is relaxing with his feet on his desk when his first-mate and quartermaster enter his cabin. Rereading the letter he was delivered, he looks up at the two and then passed them before speaking

[Imperial]-"What? The boatswain and navigator aren't here?"

Finch places the letter on his desk and folds his hands together at his waist as he gives his two chief officers the news

[Imperial]-"Well men, we be given a prime opportunity for fortune. By the time we be sailin' away they be singin' us as heroes all the while we takin' the treasure right under their noses. We headin' to Helj where we will make an impression as saviors for the young General Marcutio stationed there. This Marcutio carries an enchanted shield we seek to lift off his person and leave him unawares. This shield be worth a mighty penny and maybe we'll find the opportunity to pillage some Imperials while we there too. My thinkin' the general be joyed when we come to support him and leave him with a fake in the guise of Imperial thievery."
#34
If Finch cares to listen, a small commotion could be heard outside his cabin at the same time.
Andrea's voice can be heard cursing [Imperial/???] "Milonda's Teats! Yahn pointedmen fer spinnin' hands o' meyesure preseedeth tha looparound a'we! If'n nae shilly-etcetra was oakkapie-in noggins, stianed be our repoot o' pucntualye neigh!"

Vala's response is equally stressed. [???] "Uncifered the stitch I hat afore ya flapping, prithy sub han-an-foo fer tong 'nd baid use inna cap-tane's portway all hasty-like!"

[???] "Naut ta I improliper rotsuch spew yeh! Sides, meitpoint wer intenz fa offistrates solly, of wicha me globes gays sing'lar: I. Without 'main staid."

Andrea then bursts into the cabin alone, having resumed her quadruped form. She stands at attention while facing Captain Finch, ready to demonstrate her newfound cultural sensibilities.
Out of her mouth comes ['Ob-lob'] "Cap-tane Fanch-ro-kuma, dooti repotin' be ere leal bosun, Andrew Hussie! Pardition ma tardedy. Wha happenence be we diskussin?"
#35
Finch's eye faintly twitches for a moment uncontrollably as he probably damn near has a stroke on the spot after what he just heard. Doing his best to maintain composure he responds to Andrea

[Imperial]-"I suggest you work on your Ob-Lob, boatswain, lest every one of them suddenly grow wings like Orkans if only fly inland to choke you to death. In any case, we be discussin' our newest opportunity. We be flying to Helj to ascertain an enchanted shield."
#36
Orkan has much practice keeping a straight face, and he uses all his skill to do so. He turns away from Andrea’s entrance and speaks to the Captain, [Imperial]-“Aye Captain, thy plan dost ring with riches and shimmer with gold. Have thee the liar’s shield prepared, or must we slink and sneak to gather the deception before we depart?”
#37
[Imperial]-"Alas I haven't the notion of what the shield looks like. Any counterfeit prepared now would likely be useless and a waste of money."
#38
[Imperial]-“Then let us depart, that we might sail the skies once more and test our mettle. Mayhaps we shall discover a juicy target on our path, and feast before we make merry.”
#39
[Finch]-"Why isn't it moving already?!"
#40
[Imperial] "Aye, many sorries befill me captane, for but a month's practice hath I," Andrea apologizes sheepishly, resolving to redouble her efforts with Edmond. "I shall get us airborne." She leaves the cabin and bids the crew raise anchor and set sail.
#41
The fresh recruits from Nrovthbar have just finished loading the provisions for the upcoming voyage north. Having twenty eight souls to operate the ropes and sails is a tremendous improvement over fifteen. Departure procedure is completed in a half hour. While the dockhands below release the last three tethers Aredfln turns to Finch at the helm.

Aredfln-[Imperial]: "Aye, we art as the season Captain. Rejuvenated an overflowing with potential."

Aredfln claps his hand against the captain's shoulder and takes his position at the aft.

The final command is given. The smokestack valves are unshuttered and the Espiegel begins to ascend. Each of the party members take their positions on the deck. Judy was given a quick tutorial on adjusting the studding sails, enough for her to act as though she belongs.

Nearly at full capacity and graced by calm northward winds, the crew is able to continue sailing through the 'night'. An even mixture of folks from Temming's Rise and Nrovthbar leave their stations to eat their first proper meal together. The food on the first few nights of any voyage are the best. Perishables such as vegetables, cheese and even meaty stew are served at the Espiegel's first meal of the voyage. Judy sits nearby Andrea, Vala and Matyas on a cot. Agrina approaches the fresh face.

Agrina-[Imperial]: "Thou wear fine threads, an' thy features even finer. Thy pearly smile art beyond compare to all of Nrovthbar that doth smile here."
#42
Judy-[Imperial]: "They had been fine threads for sure, but alas they are looking a little worse for wear right now. I've been down on my lucky for a while now and had not the chance to gain myself a new set."

Judy looks over Agrina with a smile, then says.

Judy-[Imperial]: "Ye don't lack potential yerself my dame, but a large part of a man or woman's charm comes from meticulous care, something I've sadly had to disregard for days now."

She then goes on and on, sharing with Agrina her secrets of skincare, fashion, and a pearly white smile.
#43
Orkan sits nearby, not actively engaging, but eavesdropping with interest. People always think his beauty comes so easily. Ha! If only they knew. He looks forward to a chance to borrow some tips from Judy.
#44
Agrina drops the poorly hidden interrogation. She care for actual discussions on fine beauty techniques but she is happy to connect with someone else on the ship as a friend. At the close of their meal, and thus their conversation, Agrina finishes:

Agrina-[Imperial]: "Should we be'est inundated with leisure after our orders art complete thou ought accompany me to the nearest brothel, from my purse we would both have entertainment."

-----

Above deck the crew are idly discussing the political situation along the border, the recent combined confederate regiment sent to defend Broadland sovereignty and maintain the freedom of Risland. Each thread of conversation leads to another until they are recalling the stories of their forefathers and foremothers passed down through generations. One deckhand begins humming an ancient tune from a time when the confederate was still Imperial land. The others join in and break into song while slamming their boots to the deck to set the tempo.

[21.2.343]

For five and a half days the Espiegel travels deeper into the shadow of the Empire. Eventually the fiery yellow glimmers of patrolling air ships fade into view. The lookout at the prow passes news of an approaching ship signalling to submit. By Finch's estimation, the ship ought to be confederate. The crew waits for their captain's command.
#45
Finch having spent the majority of the journey ensuring that the new blood on the ship is performing efficiently has had little time for personal pleasure on the voyage. What time he had to himself was spent reading and practicing his Dindavaran. When the crew sings he does not join in but does tap his foot along to the tune. As the vessel approaches the Espiegel Finch gives the order to submit in calm fashion.

[Imperial]-"Have no worries scalawags. We be entering contested territory and there's no need to ruffle feathers."

Finch will watch with interest and await signaling from the vessel. Assuming they signal friendly Finch will see that the ships are brought alongside each other in reasonable time.
#46
Andrea sticks her human legs up, able to reach the adjacent cot. [Edmond] "Ooooee, a costin' stablishem host ta thooes trained'n inundatein they nethers merly. Wha say ye ta'we falwin soot?"
Vala turns red, and her liege guffaws.
[Edmond]"Untenze in all sorortias, than checkered japery simple be! Maech mar thana mite uncouth, ev'n abneomal use fer's."

At the sighting, they climb back topside and Andrea demorphs.
#47
Both lower altitude to catch winds that set them to the same course. No shots are fired by the stranger air ship inside firing range. As the Espiegel pulls up the party gets a shadowed view of the mystery ship.

The ship is a smaller scouting vessel of confederate design. It is about 35 feet in length, heavily weathered with an internal Ozcrow and a slew of traditional sails for agility and tacking. It has 2 cannons aimed at the Espiegel. Ropes are fired across the decks of each ship with bows and secured to rails. While the crews on both ships prepare a boarding bridge the lieutenant (based on his armor) yells out to the Espiegel.

Unknown soldier-[Imperial]: "I compel thee to state thy calling and purpose!"
#48
Finch calls back to the man

[Imperial]-"We be here ta offer our services to one General Marcutio! I be Captain Finchroscuma Kokadamurinsapantuheno and privateering be my profession! With luck we'll be sending foreign vessels to their doom in a couple days!"
#49
Unknown soldier-[Imperial]: "Fellow blades art most welcomed! Permit me mine responsibility of inspection an' thou shall be free to have thy desired audience!"
#50
[Imperial]-"Aye, inspect away!"
