Interovegas4.3 Footway Robbery - A Fish In Water

[26.2.343]

Captain Finch takes Agrina along as he wanders the streets in search of the telltale noise and ruckus of an alehouse. It does not take long for Finch to find an alehouse in the third ring of the city. As he approaches he and Agrina can see six souls with scabbards at their sides, bows hung on nearby stump seats and cards laid out on the table next to a pitcher of ale. By the look of their garb the whole lot must be from beyond the boundaries of Waelass. Agrina tugs at Finch's coat to quietly grab his attention.

Agrina-[Imperial]: "Mercenaries held by the stupor of ale be free with their words aye, but they be free with their blades as well. Perhaps tis best we not risk ourselves here Captain."

[Imperial]-"Drunkards are only dangerous if you beat them at the game of cards. Grab yerself a drink and prop yerself up behind the meanest lookin' one. If'n I look tah yeah nod if his hand is good."

Finch takes a couple paces away from Agrinna and waves her away dismissively

[Imperial]-"How many times I got tah tell ya lass? I ain't given yah any money! It's plain yer not some sewer derro so get lost!"

Turning away from Agrinna, Finch startles when he finds himself standing near the group of mercenaries playing cards

[Imperial]-"Ah, what have we here! A game of cards and drink? Deal me in my nippers I'm already tired of the dour people of this city!"
#3
[Imperial Comprehension: 7,4,4,4 Result: Jabber JABBER]

The largest of the lot is a man of a remarkably pale (read: tan) complexion.

Tan(gram) Man-[Imperial]: "Move cheat kraitling to yaz side table."

The man gives a look to the rest of the mercenaries gathered around. Then breaks into laughter.

Tan Man-[Imperial]: "Good try cheat us though. No blame you try. Sit play card as brave warrior not as no honor coward!"

The man deals Finch three cards.

Tan Man-[Imperial]: "Merchant Folly is easy game. Seven us here now mean six turn. Each go pass card to soul left, get card from soul right. End of six show card. Soul with highest and soul with lowest lose! Go go until two or one left. Many low or many high all lose. Play one coin at time."

Finch checks his cards, he sees a king, nine and five.
#4
[Imperial]-"My Imperial really must be improving if you were able to overhear and understand me. My protege could use the experience; humor her and I and I'll buy you all a round of drinks."

Finch passes the king and tosses his coin to the pile. Seeing as a drink hasn't been brought his way yet he pulls out his flask and takes a sip while he makes conversation.

[Imperial]-"Ahhh. Can barely see in this dark land. Do the eyes ever get used to this or do the people here primarily move about by touch?"
#5
[Imperial: 6,5,3,1 Result: HAHN?]

The men and women at the table look at Finch for a moment but ultimately ignore his request. A bystander shoos her over to Finch's side. By all accounts they seem to know the telltale signs of basic cheats and tricks. The card he receives from the very brown woman to his right is a two of knives (the common suits are knives, coins, lives and beasts).

[Imperial: 7,7,7,1 Result: Jibber d'Jabber]

Finch's second comment gets a chuckle. The tan man handling finishes passing his card to his left and responds.

Tan Man-[Imperial]: "Dark very much I not know ifn I stick my stick woman or slug! Though if slug technique is good I give no complain!"

He and a few the others break into raucous laughter at his rather crude humor.
#6
Finch laughs with them because it's actually a pretty good joke and really for no other reason. As he takes the next card from the person on his right and looks at his hand Finch tries to slide a question into the conversation.

[Imperial]-"Been to a lot of places but none in so rough a shape as this. Didn't think fightin' off creatures of dark just to get here would be so dissapointin'. What happin' here to have folk hidin'? Seems tah me this unusual treatment of a captured city what with the city guards watchin' the gate an not Imperial soldiers."

Reminding himself of the nature of his company Finch keeps a sharp eye for anyone trying to sneak into his pockets while he's at the table. They may have allowed him at the table but Finch knows better than to completely trust people not too dissimilar from himself. He passes the two

[Imperial: 10,9,9,2 Result: It's all about COMMUNICATION]

The woman beside him slides another card over. Finch picks up a six of lives. As he carefully sets the card in his hand a second woman with a paler sandy tan complexion responds.

Sandy Tan Woman-[Imperial]: "No knowin people much scare nothing. Many story beast eat small no knowin people in dark. We know right. Army souls take no knowin people go work digging and farm working."

Tan Man-[Imperial]: "You no look them. I see you people my home. ...Ob...Lobster? Me not know you people do sword coin work."
#8
[Imperial]-"I be missin' the sea that be sure but an Ob-Lob is always keen to make some coin. Came out here tah see what money to be made by blade or trade. Disappointing tah arrive an' find the only thing worthwhile is a game of cards. At least it's good company."

As he hands the five over he takes another swig of his drink.

[Imperial]-"That be my story here what about you lot? These folk don' seem like the usual Imperial soldiers an' if you ain't diggin' holes for them they must not be payin' well. Don't tell me the beast in the dark is eatin' the souls they hirin'?"
#9
[Imperial: 9,6,6,2 Result: This man is blessed with comprehension]

The tan man stands up and demonstrates his great size. The crown of his head reaches six and one half paces off the ground. Little does he know Finch has been keeping the company of true giant.

Tan Man-[Imperial]: "NASSUR LI-AK! We bring sand fury cold land many glory have!"

The others join in with a cheer and a collective drink.

Tan Man-[Imperial]: "You more blade souls? Maybe duel next cycle. Want know how Ob-Lob blade coin maker fight."

Finch is passed then queen of lives.
#10
Finch grins at the mans enthusiasm and replies with a laugh

[Imperial]-"You're as big as a man I met recently! A kindred spirit of his perhaps? Were I in better condition I'd offer to duel you now for the fun!"

Finch looks around at the nearby alleys and buildings and is reminded of the lack of guards about. He leans in closer to the table as he passes the queen he just received.

[Imperial]-"I'm surprised no guards are already runnin' here at the mention of a duel. There be no risk of run ins with the guard captain or irons around ones wrists? I aught know the name such a man that allows fellows like us tah break his peace. Lest of course the high and mighty be into their drink as much as the rest of us!"
#11
[Imperial: 10,10,6,4 Result: Still Talking]

A second man adds.

Second Man-[Imperial]: "You many question. Find relax play game. No much do here now other bet coin."

Nassur Li-Ak-[Imperial]: "Much right, such wow Khaimat."

Nassur Li-Ak-[Ruhini]: "באמא שלך יוויין ופליקס"

Nassur laughs loudly and the others around the table except for Khaimat do much the same. He takes a drink and shrugs off whatever remark Nassur said. Finch is passed the king of coins.
#12
[Imperial]-"Bah, simply my curiosity getting the better of me. You're right, there is game to be played!"

Finch recognizes that he won't get a whole lot else from these people other than more banter and resigns himself to playing the rest of the game. He'll play three rounds in total and actively tries to lose the first two towards the end but will try and win the third. He'll continue making banter with the men and women but otherwise doesn't ask any more questions. He does keep an eye out for any interesting figures that come or go from the bar but won't pursue them and goes to the market when the third game is done.
#13
There are no interesting figures at the alehouse other than the foreign mercenaries. Finch finds himself out three coins at the end of the rounds. He gives his farewells and makes way for the market.
