JOJO'S BIZARRE ADVENTURE, PART 6: STONE OCEAN [Anime + Manga]

After nearly 2 long years, we receive the long awaited news: Stone Ocean is getting its anime adaptation!!


There isn't much info out there this early on, but we do know that the main character, Jolyne Cujoh will be voiced by Ai Fairouz.

I'm both excited and apprehensive as this is the last Part in the original sequence before the reboot.

It's looking good, although I have mixed feelings about it being released first on Netflix exclusively for about a month.

First off, the visuals are stunning. I've always liked the art style of Stone Ocean the best out of all the parts, as the line art is crisp and the colors are strong as opposed to the washed out pastels of the latter parts, and the anime replicates and enhances this. The characters (and their Stands) look gorgeous, at least the main characters do as David Production has made the odd decision of using monochrome silhouettes for the normies that don't matter.

The voice acting and music are top notch, bursting to the seams with the high energy insanity we've come to know and love from previous Part animations.

SpoilerThe chronology at the beginning of the manga was kind of confusing, but I didn't feel any of that confusion with Episode 1 which covers that part. Elf lawyer's ears seem to grow larger from feeding off the energy of his clients suffering.

That said, there are an alarming amount of scenes from the manga they left out. Some of those are innocuous and aren't as relevant to the plot, like Jolyne staring at the genitals of this transexual dude who got lumped into the women's prison. But then they also leave out the part where she learns she has to cough up some bribe money in order to keep her hairstyle and outfit.

In particular I feel that they could have done a better job with the final beatdown of the Gwess fight, with perhaps a slow motion scene demonstrating how since Stone Free is made of strings, her fists can be split up so they can go right through the gaps of a barbed wire fence to punch things on the other side at full strength. I fear that from the POV of viewers who haven't read the manga it might seem like an asspull that Jolyne can hit Gwess with her Stand anyway despite her not being able to break through moments earlier.

Also fun fact, in the fighting game Eyes of Heaven the character Enrico Pucci was voiced by Joji Nakata, the same VA for Kotomine Kirei in everyone's favorite battle royale simulator visual novel. I would have have loved to see him reprise the role as Pucci just resembles Kirei so much, but instead he's being voiced by the VA for Gilgamesh, ironically.
