Purism CEO Todd Weaver interviewed by Swapnil Bhartiya from TFIR:
Making Linux Phone A Reality! V2 - https://hooktube.com/watch?v=IzEfy7-cPgA - May 17, 2018

Does Purism design their own hardware, or take the conventional route of buying from Chinese vendors and branding it? Or do you really design your hardware?
Todd: It's split, and initially we went to existing ODMs for our laptop. We would source certain component parts, called 'public molds', like our case, which allows us to save a lot of money up front on tooling costs. We utilized existing public molds and then modifying to our needs with aftertooling, cutouts for hardware kill-switches, reprinted key caps, etc.
The motherboard is an intel reference design that was modified for our needs: hard-ware killswitches, TPM, etc.
Version 4 of the librem 15 (which comes out later this year) will be from schematics on up with our own industrial and mechanical design.
The phone (schematics, EE, industrial design) is all Purism, working with individual groups near Shenzhen to do fabrication.
