SilkScarfHighwaymen RPG Opening Act: My Way or the Highway (part 2)

Ruru begins timidly taps her index fingers together as she gradually finds it difficult to maintain eye contact with the blacksmith.
"Say, uh... could I... ask you to make... something for me? Not like a weapon... but... like... a pendant or a ring?"

"Erm," says Bronan, "I'm not a goldsmith. Best I can do is probably a plain one."

"It doesn't say anything about the diplomats personal guards here. We can probably get some information from my contacts in the capital, although I really am starting to doubt their integrity and ability after this last stint," says Harry.

"A plain one is fine. I just want something... made from here... in case things turn bad... Thanks Bronan! If we head into town later, I'll be sure to get some peaches for you."

Ruru takes out her rusty blade.
"By the way, do you think I could get some work done on this, please?"

"A road block is gonna be essential, but I don't much like that caltrops idea Brue. Assuming the darn things don't sink in the mud or get washed away, they'll cause trouble for us too on account of the water hiding 'em from view. We don't need to wait til they get to the river, we can just set up in that northern forest and fell a few big trees along the road."
Ronaldo stands up. "What do you say to me and whoever can keep up riding on down to scout out the area in advance?"

"It's a two day journey to the Hill Capital by horse, I think we could scout half of the way and turn back so we have time to prepare," says Harry.

"I can sharpen and polish it for 5 Roos," says Bronan, "it'll dull pretty fast if you hit anyone with it though."

"Hmmmm. How much would it cost to get something new made? Also what would you recommend?"

Ruru checks to see how much she's got.

"Did our bosses give us any money to finance this mission? Aside from our salary of course. We really should look into getting some better gear for this mission, our weapons won't count for much if the guards have even standard issue gear."
Reply

"A new one would be 2 Rues," says Bronan, "and it won't be much better than the one you got."

(You [all] got 20 Rues in your pocket, maybe you'll pop some tags? 1 Rue = 50 Roos)

"They didn't give us anything yet," says Harry, "looks like everything will be out of pocket until next month. We can try to rely on our numbers even though the quality of our equipment isn't the best, unless you have some connections with some proper weapons dealers. As inaccurate as they may be, our pistols are still lethal within a certain range."

Ruru hands her rusty blade to Bronan the blacksmith.
"I'll get this fixed up then. What else is on the menu?"
Reply

Bronan blinks blankly, "sure girl, but I think the person who manages the menu is Bob, if you want the menu you'd need to ask him."

Ruru stares blankly at Bronan.
"Weapons. What other weapons can you make."

"Oh, erm, the my best is the hand axe. I'm also pretty good at making maces, spearheads, and of course hunting knives."

How much for a couple of hunting knives?

Pepe - Menu? Do you has tendies?

"30 Roos a knife, or 2 for 1 Rue," says Bronan, "and uh, if you want chicken you should go ask Bob."

Ruru hands Bronan 55 Roos in exchange for the trinket, blade maintenance, and 2 hunting knives.
"2 for 1 sounds good. I'll go with that, thanks."

Ruru goes back to the planning crew.
"Who's got the good news So, what's the plan?"

"Alright, the stuff will be ready the day after tomorrow," says Bronan, taking your money.

Bob slaps a slab of raw chicken breast into Pepe's hand.

Ronaldo requests two spearheads from Bronan, and sees who will accompany him on his scouting.

"Spearheads are the same deal as hunting knives, pole(batteries) not included."

"I don't think the people who don't know how to ride horses should go, you'll only slow the scouting party down," says Harry.

All right, here's the plan: Me 'n Noire, plus any other riders will form a scouting party. We'll head down south now and find a good place or two to set up our ambush.

Bronan, I'll take the two spearheads. Also, see if you can make us some saws or axes what'll fell trees quick.

In the meantime for those of you staying back, there're a couple things you want to look into:

  1. Getting carts or something we can roll over and form a road block with, if there aren't any convenient trees nearby.
  2. Looking for information on the ambassador and his trip, although that'll be risky as it might tip them off.
  3. Finding a new mark to rob, for funds in case this thing goes sour and/or we don't get paid.

"Aw, but I wanted to go with Ms. Noire."
Reply

"Can't do number three, you all promised we wouldn't rob as part of the contract."

She looks at Ruru with a sad smile. "Sorry kiddo, not this time unfortunately. But I promise after this mission I'll teach you what I know about riding, that way you can come as well, sound good?"

Pepe begins cooking some trendies. He starts a fire, pulls out some flour and a frying pan from his knapsack, and starts frying the chicken.

“Tendies!!” Pepe exclaims with glee.

"Alright buddy," says Bronan.

Pepe makes some deliciously fatty chicken.

Paul the Postman volunteers to join the two riders, Ronaldo and Noire on the scouting trip, and the three set out with a rough copy of the map that was included in the booklet, not that the original was particularly well done either.

They ride down from their mountainous base with three days worth of provisons, following the road to the border. All goes well along the way, and you present your border crossing permit, also provided in the booklet, to the border patrol officer. He lets you go after jotting something down in his notebook. Afterwards, the border patrol on the Hill side does the same.

You follow the road forward, and the ground gradually becomes flatter, with sparse forests on either side of the road. You observe that its possible to set up an ambush at fairly many points ever since you've crossed into Hill territory, the borderlands seem sparsely inhabited and there is a scant military presence beyond the regiment stationed at the border.

After around a three hour journey, however, you bump into some of your peers.

"Stand and deliver!"

Its a group of six ragged looking men holding a strange medley of weaponry. Two of them have simple clubs with nails sticking out, one has a section of chain with what seems to be a scale weight attached to the end, one has a sharp looking kitchen knife attached to a stick, and the last two have axes. One of the axe wielders seems to be the leader, and is also wielding a matchlock pistol.

You almost feel sorry for your foreign compatriots, who are obviously not as successful as you guys at the ways of banditry.

(People in the base can also act)

Ruru looks at Brue and Pepe as they each do their thang.
"Sooooooooooooooooo... Anyone wanna go to town with me? It's been ages since we've been able to go around town normally."
Reply

"Nah, I don't think so." Ronaldo puts his hands on his hips as he surveys their assailants. "You guys must be new to this whole robbin' business, huh? Is this all the boys you've got?"
Reply

"Yeah, let's go. I've been meaning to look around Luw anyhow."

As Ronaldo talks to the bandits Noire simple prepares to quickdraw her pistol and shoot the leader in case things go south.

(waiting on Pepe's response in camp thread)

The bandit wielding the dangerous looking section of chain is visibly perplexed at Ronaldo's response.

"Hey boss, this ain't like how we rehearsed it? What do we do now?" he "whispers" to his boss so loudly that everyone can hear him.

The "boss" kicks Mr. Chain in the shins.

"Shut up Dipi, you aren't making us look threatening enough."

The man with the knife on a stick seems to be a little more sharp eyed than the rest. He nudges his boss.

"Hey boss, they're armed!"

"Oh shit!"

The boss starts fumbling for his match and the group of bandits begins backing away at the same time.

"We're not afraid of you, alright?! Surrender or I'll shoot!"

(Your guns are flintlocks, and you normally keep them unloaded for safety.)

Ronaldo waves his hand, continuing to speak in a calm, easy manner. "Whoa-ho there, let's not be Nervous Nellies here. If you shoot, you can bet your hat we'll start shootin' right back, and start a real tussle going. You sure you boys are ready ta risk life and limb just cuz this fella here asked you to?"
He cracks a friendly grin.
"But hey, I get where you folks are comin' from. In fact, I'm in business of "forced acquisition" myself. So, can we have a civil chat between men, or are you gonna keep on with the ole "stand and deliver" shtick?"

Ruru grabs one of Brue's hands, flashing a grin at him.
"Yay! lets go!"

She starts walking in the direction of town while attempting to drag Brue along.

Brue does not resist arrest, but motions for Pepe to come along.

Strangely enough, he suddenly begins to crave for a banana split.

"What?! You guys are outlaws too?"

The boss seems more frightened by this piece of information than your weapons.

"Are ya guys part of the Southern Scourge?! Don't hurt us, we ain't do nothin!"

The band of six begins running away.

Ruru manhandles Brue along to town while Brue looks back longingly at the man slowly savoring his fried chicken. Sadly, Pepe does not hold the same affection for Brue as he does for his tendies, and proceeds to ignore the blue haired boy.

After an hour long walk, the two arrive at the nearby town of Uuuuuuuue, an agricultural village situated on the riverside.

As you enter the town you see everyone nearby staring at you, but after a while they return to their own businesses. It doesn't seem like they get a lot of visitors.

There's a minstrel situated in the town square, playing a jaunty tune. Perhaps, if you wish, you could ask him for direction?

"Should we correct them or...?" She whispers to Ronaldo.

"Uh, we're with the Handsome Host, not those guys!" Ronaldo calls out. He turns back to Noire and shrugs. "Hey, as long as it works."

Ruru looks for somewhere comfortable to sit in range of the minstrel and motions towards it.
"Lets take a break and enjoy the music."

"Actually, I kind of want a banana split. If you give me some cash, I can buy you one too, while I'm at it."
Reply

"Sure, let's go together. I'm sure you didn't come to Luw just for banana splits, though. What made you decide to leave home and come here?"

"Well then we seem to be done with that little distraction, wanna choose an exact place for our ambush so we have something to report to the boss?"

As the group of unlucky men run away, one of them hesitates briefly, seems to be cognizant of Ronaldo's words, but continues running away seeing as his allies have left him in the dust.

You may continue on this road as there is still a good deal of ground to cover until you reach the next major city.

"We've got time to spare, let's keep going." Ronaldo continues along the road.
