Diablo 2: Lawd o' Destruction [PC - RPG]
Posted by: Corenat Rovarnus - 07-19-2018, 12:21 AM - Forum: Gaming General - Replies (8)

We played this game enough back in high school that it's rather odd to find no threads about it on the old forum. In fact, we didn't mention it at all.

Legitimate Acquisition --> http://us.blizzard.com/en-us/games/d2/
DL Path --> We Don't Do That Here. But life, ah, finds a way. I can upload if anyone wants it.

The codifying entry of the Action RPG genre, Diablo II is the template from which hundreds of derivatives were spawned*, introducing such mechanics as point 'n click hack 'n slash, completely randomized item drops, and that stupidly annoying grid inventory system.
Choose one of five(seven in the expansion) heroes to play in a top-down isometric "2.5D" point of view. Click on things really fast and watch them die! Click on the wrong parts of the ground in a boss fight and watch yourself die!

*Torchlight, Titan Quest, Path of Exile, Victor Vran's Garbage Can, Kingdoms of Beta Amyloid: Reckoning, etc.

I recently played through Acts I-IV on normal difficulty, hence the creation of this post. I shall now recount the tale of my journey!

Character Creation - I picked Barbarian for class as I like to mix things up, and it's the farthest away from the style that I used to play ARPGs in, which many would regard as the "wrong" way: Summon a massive army of dudes and let them bulldoze through all the enemies with sheer numbers while I take a scenic tour of Sanctuary.
Early on I decided to commit to a dual wielding Frenzy-based build, because shields are for pussies. The fear warcry is pretty useless because I actually want the mobs to be near me so I can hit them, but it's a prereq for the rest of the warcries.

Act I - Hours of mindless spamclicking fun. Quill rats and other ranged mobs proved to be of some annoyance to my pure melee character, while my necro could have just used bone spear or sicced the skelemans on them. Andariel was tough but fair, managed to kill her in one run with no deaths or portals

Act II - Ironically died a couple times to Radament, the very first boss that I underestimated because I didn't read the lore and thought he was just a giant sewer rat. I start itemizing for resistances, although I can't really tell what elements are in those black spiky projectiles those mummy guys are shooting out. This Act has the Arcane Sanctuary, which remains my favorite level in the game, and the Summoner, who went down rather easily.
Duriel was tough and painful by contrast to Horazon and pretty much everything else I'd fought so far. Took half my half in one hit, and I had to portal back to town about 3 times.

Act III - I figure the story team started running out of steam around halfway through this act. You don't get a quest to start you off when you arrive in Kurast, so you just have to kinda wander around the jungle aimlessly until you find something. Two of the quests have no intro, they literally start when you find some item and end with you returning the item to someone in town and them going "oh that's nice" (but not plot-relevant). The pygmy blow dart kids remained the most annoying enemy in the game, being small(hard to click on), ranged, and fast. The pygmy shaman nearly killed me every time he used the flamethrower attack. Fire resistance is important!
Mephisto fight was a straight up slugfest. It was pretty easy, but it took an eternity to whittle down his HP. The real challenge was killing all the elite council member guys right outside his room, they offed my mercenary a couple times.

Of course, the indisputable best girl is ALL MIGHT. I'm open to discussions in which you praise his merits or pose wrong, incorrect alternatives.

I'm very eager to see the development of his chosen successor, the indomitable GRAPE-MAN, into the valiant hero he was always meant to be.

  Hanebado

Hanebado!
Season: Summer 2018
Studio: LIDENFILMS
MAL: https://myanimelist.net/anime/37259/Hanebado

After marathoning all three seasons of the high school volleyball anime Haikyuu!! a few years ago (and LOVING it), I had proven myself open to watching sports anime. So when I saw this clip from episode 1 of the badminton anime Hanebado!, I decided to try it out.

Things that stood out immediately (contains spoilers from Episodes 1 and 2):

1. Life-like animation, realistic sports

If LIDENFILMS can maintain that level of quality all throughout the show, I'll give the show at least a 7/10 on that merit alone. The animation is on par with Haikyuu!!, and strives for an even higher level of realistic movement, which is PUMPED UP with dynamic camera-work.

Seeing how GREAT Hanebado!'s animation is honestly makes me feel pretty bad for Megalo Box (Spring 2018), which finished not even a month ago. Megalo Box had a slick animation style going for it, but the actual boxing scenes were poorly done: choppy frames, floaty and repetitive combat, camera-work that obscures the action instead of enhancing it.

The boxing in Megalo Box was like the fighting in Dragon Ball Z. Hanebado! is definitely top notch.

2. I LOVE THE OP

So dynamic and pretty it's amazing. The song is aight, but nothing to write home about. I'd say Haikyuu!! OP 5 is an example of an amazing OP song. (Not to make this all about Haikyuu!!, but OP 5 also did a great job telling the stories of the characters while also building hype for the match of the season. It's very rare you get narrative cohesion AND good animation AND a great song all in one OP).

Bad things (so far):

1. No clear goals/hype. No sense of urgency.

So right off the bat we meet our 'two' main characters (more on that later), and get character conflict; the older Aragaki loves badminton but has no talent, and the younger Hanesaki hates badminton but is an accomplished prodigy.

Cue angst and jealousy from Aragaki, and an honorable badminton duel between the two to settle their differences.

OK, so we get awesome fight scenes, but is the whole season going to be about their passive-aggressive sniping during after-school practice?

The Coach/mentor character was introduced here, but there's no game-plan! When's the tournament? Who are the rival schools? What's the path to nationals?

I'm trying to remember when the hype kicked in for Haikyuu!! It definitely took a few episodes, but once it started, the ride was non-stop amazing. Haikyuu!! excelled at establishing stakes, hyping up rivals, and forcing the characters to earn each victory.

I could see Hanebado! fizzling out without a similar driving force, which, in sports anime, comes from tournament arcs.

2. I don't care about one of the "main characters"

Episodes 1 and 2 gave us a lot of background and motivations for Aragaki, but almost none for Hanesaki. So despite being drip-fed bits and pieces about her history, I get so fucking fed up with Hanesaki's refusal to play badminton, BECAUSE I CAME HERE TO WATCHING THEM PLAYING FUCKING BADMINTON.

I've seen shows before that had a bunch of interesting side characters who have their own little subplot and then disappear, while supposedly setting up a great character arc for the MC. But then after all the side characters get their 5 minutes of  the MC gets a rushed character arc

Haikyuu!! is a show that could pull off having two main characters (even though it was basically an ensemble cast), because we got enough time to see both of their motivations, struggles, and eventual triumphs.

Hopefully we'll see that for Hanesaki.

3. Randomly weird character designs

Pink hair in anime is pretty common. But why include a pink-haired twin-tails girl when the rest of the cast has relatively realistic dark-toned hair colors? It just stands out in a bad way, making the cast design seem incoherent.

Ongoing evaluation:

I'm definitely keeping up with this one, but hoping the plot and hype arrive soon.

Starcraft 2: Legacy of the Void

Previously, on Church of ProZ:
My thoughts on the HotS campaign: http://churchofproz.forumotion.net/t1292-heart-of-the-swarm-campaign
Vroop's review http://churchofproz.forumotion.net/t1493-legacy-of-the-void-campaign

I'm playing through the single player campaign, will continue to post my thoughts as I progress.

  • They really went all out for this installment, there's a cutscene after nearly every mission and 3 different variations of every unit in the Protoss arsenal.
  • The dialogue is kind of weird visually as since they don't have mouths, they just stare at each other meaningfully.
  • The Spear of Adun is badass, although I was expecting to get an inside view of one of those Motherships instead. Still, the call-in abilities are amazing, reminds me of the god powers in Age of Mythology.
  • The 'phase-smith' Karax's voice is just so...normal. They added barely any reverb to his lines so he sounds almost like a regular human being.
  • The cultural differences between the Daelaam(mainstram Khalai) and Nerazim(Dark Templar) are finally brought into the light of day, which I really appreciate.
  • Where are my Carriers? It's annoying that you have access to the entire tech tree in the Whispers of Oblivion prologue but it all gets reset to the basics when you start the campaign proper.
