Jamar waves a hand in thanks at Jose while turning away, hiding a gloomy face.
"Unfortunately, I am not like a certain NEET who is surprisingly strong from swinging a wooden sword everyday. I am not confident I have the strength to walk around with that armor on."

Jamar then walks over to inspect the unidentified contraption with Samad.

Cory takes an axe and examines the contraption in the center of the room more closely, indexing it with his phone.

[Items have been acquired]
While Jose is denied a live demonstration he can tell there's almost no fit between the armor and Jamar, it might just fall right off that slender frame.

The clamp Samad mentioned earlier forms part of the centerpiece of the contraption, attached to a few large ring shaped structures to either side. The centerpiece is mounted on some kind of turret mechanism, allowing it to be rotated in place horizontally and to some degree vertically. A pair of handles sticks out to one side, one of which is broken off. Indeed, there are several places where a part must have broken off. Even diminished in size, it's too large for one person to reasonably carry.
"Hm, I'd like to take this back to town for further study, but we only have two camels. It'll have to wait, I suppose."
For now, the contraption is catalogued under the name "Ancient Weapon" by Jamar and Cory. [Unless there's some other name they wish to use.]

Samad hangs his newly acquired sword on his belt. "Alright, I think we've checked out everything in this room. Where shall we go next?"
Reply
"I think this might be one of those mythical sunbeam lasers," says Cory, "the broken glass is probably whats left of lenses, and the handles are used to rotate the contraption to focus the light on enemies or something."
Reply
Samad is unfamiliar with this concept. "Sunbeam... lay-zers? I've never heard such a strange word before. Could you explain further, Jay's son?"
Reply
Cory explains the concept of a magnifying glass to Samad.

"Light actually contains energy, that's why it feels so hot. By using glass you can focus it into a single point and it can catch stuff on fire."
Reply
"Well yes, there's light energy. And I have heard of oracles using glass orbs to focus their power, although it is the rarest type of implement among magic users.

...But I suspect that's not what you're talking about. I don't spend much time in cities, but I've never seen ordinary glass setting something on fire."
Reply
"Before today you've never seen a nonmagical device that can record a moment in time either, so that shouldn't be too hard to far-fetched at this point, right? On another note, could I borrow your translation journal for a moment, please?"
Reply
"Are you saying this weapon here exists where you come from?"
Reply
"I'm just lending credence to Jason's idea. The technology for such a feat exists where we come from, though it isn't used primarily in weaponry."
Reply
Samad's sudden suspicious mood seems to dissipate. "I see, I see. What do you need my translation notes for?"
Reply
"I'm curious about both your language and the language of these ancients. I could make a quick copy using my device here and share it among our party. I'm sure this would allow us to be of more use to you as well."
Reply
"Alright, have at it then." Samad hands Jamar his journal.

Ooc: figured I'd ask before I post, what exactly can our phones do?
Reply
They are capable of anything you know that a modern "flagship" smartphone can do, with a few exceptions listed in the spoiler:

Show Content

Despite being a work in progress Samad's journal possesses a wealth of information on the Dakavid script. With the Singularity's advanced OCR algorithm Jamar estimates he can digitize the journal's current contents in as little as 15 minutes, although it would take up to 30 minutes to ensure optimal quality and that nothing is missed.
Reply
Cory googles "how to turn a phone battery into a bomb" and starts learnin.
Reply
Jamar opts for quality and begins the 30 minute indexing.
"This might take a while to copy. Do you mind if I keep your journal on hand for a while as we continue travelling? I'd imagine this'll take around 30 minutes total. I'll just continue the process whenever we stop, like now."
Reply
"Sure, just keep it safe. Now... uh..." Samad looks around and sees that most of the party is either on their phone or mindlessly milling about. "I'm going to go check out the other rooms, who's coming with me?"

Tomoe goes searching for a knife, cloth, and anything else that would be useful in the dissecting of the creature killed earlier.
Reply
Tomoe sees that all the working knives are currently in the hands of Jose and Jamar. There are still some bladed weapons lying about but they make for poor substitutes. Cloth may be supplied from one of the camelbags.
Reply
Seeing that Tomoe is looking for a knife, Jamar stops indexing the journal, hands Tomoe a knife, and follows Samad.
Reply
Tomoe takes the knife and cloth and gets to dissecting the Konopros.

Jamar and Samad walk back out into the antechamber. The middle door and left stairs remain unexplored.
Reply
"So we have to choose from the 'dorms' or the 'selection' room. What do you think 'selection' refers to?"
Reply
Jose indexes the insides of the Konopros while Tomoe dissects it.
Reply
Samad: "I can think of a few things. One might be the sorting of soldiers into different roles or ranks based on aptitude, like promoting a footman to officer. My other, more morbid thought is that they are being selected for...decimation. I know some kingdoms have the practice of culling their own troops to preserve order." He shudders at that idea.

Taking the knife, Tomoe shoos Jose away before she gets to cutting up the scorpion, and makes a call to the Google operative. "Sorry to bother you, is there any way I can send samples of creatures to HQ instead of cutting them up? None of us has experience doing something like this, so I don't want to screw anything up."
Reply
Jamar lets out a dry chuckle.
"Maybe we should investigate the dorms for now and visit the 'selection' room when everybody's on board."

WinkInexplicably, everyone hears the sound of a horse neighing in the distance.
Tomoe gets the auto-responder: Two-way interdimensional transport is not authorized at this time. Reaching 5% of your threshold will unlock this capability.

"Why, you think they won't want to see the dorms? We might end up having to sleep there if things go bad," Samad jests. "I'm kidding, let's go."
[Anyone else accompanying them? To be continued in 48 hours.]

"You know, its called selection because it wants us to select to go there," says Cory, "I'll go check it out"

>(Implying that hes heading to selection)

Jose keeps trying to index the scorpion's innards.

Cory leaves the arsenal and crosses over to the other side of the antechamber where he starts making his way up the stairs, which have a clockwise spiral.

Samad pulls open the door, which scrapes against the floor with a louder creak. A wave of stale air sweeps over him and Jamar. The room beyond is dark, but they can tell it is quite large- and that gray, ragged looking humanoid figure is standing near the doorway. It makes a low pitched scratchy groan as it turns around, revealing a horrific face that has been nearly flayed open down the middle.
It starts limping towards Samad and Jamar.
Reply
"KYAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa"
Jamar screams while slamming the door shut and runs back to the other room where everyone else is.
Reply
"Ahhh! What is that?!" Samad exclaims and backs away from the door while Jamar runs back into the arsenal.

Cory makes it to the top of the stairs, where he sees the second floor, somewhat better lit by a caved in hole in the ceiling. The floor has pieces of rubble strewn among stone pedestals and statues. Before he can get a better look he hears the sounds from downstairs.
[anyone can act now]

Cory sighs, readies his axe, and heads downstairs.
Reply
Cory comes back down to see Samad staring in fear at the middle door, which is promptly shoved open by the morbid looking gray creature. It shambles towards him.
Reply
Cory chucks his licence plate like a discus at the thing's face, and then gives it the axe(no not literally, like chop him in the face hur hur), screaming "EIIIIIIIIIIIIIII!!!!" all the way.

Due to a combination of inexperience and plain misfortune the license plate misses the monster completely, clanging against the opposite wall. That sound however is enough to snap Samad out of his fear induced paralysis, and he quickly backs away to avoid the thing's swipe.
Cory screams the war cry of his people as he strikes the monster with his axe.

While it's occupied with Samad, Cory buries his axe into the creature's back, creating a wound as large as the one on its head. The axe seems to get stuck in the creature's flesh. It tries to turn around to attack Cory.
[Anyone can act, Cory probably should]
Reply
"FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK!"

Cory drops his weapon and runs back to the arsenal to get another axe.
Reply
Cory lets go of the axe and runs into the arsenal accompanied by Samad, and the monster starts shuffling after. The group hears a chorus of low pitched groans in the distance.
"Oh gods, what horrors have we awoken?" Samad mutters in dismay.
[allowing time for someone else to do something while Cory grabs another axe]
Reply
Tomoe, snapping out of a daze, hangs up the phone and heads to the shouting pistol drawn and starts aiming at an enemy taking shots at the nearest one's head.
Reply
Waiting a few seconds for Cory and Samad to clear the doorway Tomoe opens fire.

The monster keels over on the second shot, it's already mutilated head falling apart. You hear the shuffling of several staggered footsteps coming from the direction of the Dorms but nothing visible through the doorway of the arsenal.
[Cory has obtained another axe, there are now 0 working axes left in the arsenal]

Jamar looks for something flammable like oil.
Reply
Jamar sees a few jars which might have held some liquid, but no oil. There is a good deal of scrap wood though from the contraption and weapon parts.
Reply
"Hey Jose, is your hair gel, spray, or whatever flammable?"
Reply
"What ever do you mean? There's barely enough for myself," Jose says, whipping his head around and sending droplets of hair gel everywhere.
Reply
Jamar slows down, hoping for some semblance of communication.
"flammable. Meaning it can catch on fire. Does it burn? It should be written on the container if it is."
Reply
Jose checks his hair gel container.
